The MC-E 2 suits younger riders aged 4–10, while the MC-E 5 delivers full competition performance for riders aged 12 and up. What is GasGas?

GasGas is a Spanish motorcycle brand now owned by Pierer Mobility Group (the same group as KTM and Husqvarna). In the electric off-road world, GasGas produces the MC-E 2 and MC-E 5 — youth electric motocross bikes built on the KTM SX-E platform with identical engineering in distinctive Red livery.

The Zero XB and XE are the brand's first dedicated off-road models — a new category of zero electric motorcycle built specifically for off-road use, developed under the All Access Initiative to bring electric dirt biking to a wider audience.

Both models are road-legal out of the box. The Zero XB (£3,890) is CBT-accessible — making it one of the most affordable road-legal electric motorcycles in the UK and a strong option for riders searching for a cheap electric motorcycle with real off-road capability. What Zero models does VoltTrail stock?

VoltTrail stocks the Zero XB and Zero XE — both road-legal electric dirt bikes. We do not currently stock other Zero models such as the Zero S, Zero SR/F, Zero FX, Zero FXE, Zero DSR or Zero DS. Those are road-oriented electric motorcycles sold through separate Zero Motorcycles dealerships.

Is the Zero XB road legal in the UK?

Yes. The Zero XB is L1e type-approved — the same licence category as a 125 electric bike. You need a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) or a full motorcycle licence, plus insurance and an MOT after 3 years. No special licence beyond CBT is required for the XB.

Sur-Ron is the UK's most popular electric dirt bike brand. Based in Chongqing, China, Sur-Ron launched the Light Bee in 2018 and changed off-road riding forever. MCIA official UK registration data confirms that Sur-Ron's Light Bee and Ultra Bee models topped the Competition category charts in 2023, recording nearly 5× more registrations than any other electric manufacturer.

What is a Sur-Ron?

A Sur-Ron is a Chinese-made electric off-road bike — sometimes called an electric dirt bike, e-moto or electric pit bike. The Sur-Ron Light Bee X is the world's most popular electric dirt bike, weighing around 110lb and capable of ~47mph. Sur-Rons are used for trail riding, pit-bike racing and backyard use. They are not road legal in standard form — the Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e is the road-legal version.

What is the difference between the Sur-Ron models?

The Light Bee X (LBX) is the entry-level adult model at ~110lb, 47mph. The Hyper Bee (sometimes called the mini Sur-Ron) is the youth pit-bike model for younger riders. The Ultra Bee HP is the full-size flagship at 187lb, 56mph and 55-mile range. The Storm Bee is the most powerful Sur-Ron at 265lb, 68mph and 75-mile range.

Can you upgrade a Sur-Ron battery to 72V?

Yes. The Sur-Ron LBX accepts 72V upgrade batteries from eWatt, DHS and Chi Battery Systems, delivering up to 28kW peak power. Note: 72V batteries require an aftermarket controller. VoltTrail stocks 72V upgrade batteries and compatible controllers for the LBX.

What is the difference between the Talaria Sting models?

The Talaria Sting MX3 is the entry-level 60V model. The Sting R (MX4) steps up to an upgraded 60V system with better performance. The Sting XXX (Triple X) is designed for maximum aftermarket upgrade potential. The Sting MX5 Pro (also called the Talaria Sting Pro) is the 72V flagship — the most powerful and longest-range Sting in the range.

Is the Talaria Sting road legal in the UK?

The standard Talaria Sting R, MX3, MX5 Pro and XXX are not road legal in standard configuration — they are off-road use only. The Talaria X3 (XXX) has been homologated for road use in some markets but is not currently type-approved for UK public roads. Talaria do not currently produce an L1e road-legal variant for the UK market.

72V Upgrade Batteries

A 72V battery upgrade is the single biggest performance improvement for a Sur-Ron Light Bee X or Talaria Sting. The 72V ebike battery increases peak power from ~6kW to 20–28kW depending on the pack. VoltTrail stocks eWatt, DHS and Chi 72V batteries for the LBX and Talaria platform.

60V OEM & Upgrade Batteries

The 60V battery is the standard voltage for the Sur-Ron LBX, Talaria Sting MX3 and MX4. OEM replacements restore factory spec. 60V upgrade packs from eWatt and Chi (53–70Ah) extend range by 30–50% while remaining compatible with the stock controller.

Quad Bike Batteries

Replacement batteries for kids electric quad bikes and adult ATVs. A children's quad bike battery typically runs at 12V, 24V or 36V depending on the model. Adult electric quad batteries run from 36V to 72V. Contact us to confirm the right replacement quad battery for your quad bike.

What 72V batteries fit the Sur-Ron Light Bee X?

The Sur-Ron LBX accepts several aftermarket 72V batteries including the eWatt 72V Race Battery v5 (28kW peak), the DHS GT 72V 50Ah (charger included) and the Chi Battery Gladiator X72 Compact. Note: 72V batteries require an aftermarket controller upgrade — the stock LBX controller is rated for 60V. All options are stocked at VoltTrail.

What battery does a kids quad bike use?

Most children's electric quad bikes use 12V, 24V or 36V sealed lead-acid or lithium batteries. A children's quad bike battery replacement depends on the brand and model — Revvi quads, FunBikes and Razor quads all use different specs. What is the difference between an OEM battery and an upgrade battery?

An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) battery is a direct like-for-like replacement at the same voltage and capacity as the factory pack — it restores your bike to original spec. An upgrade battery increases capacity (Ah) or voltage (V) beyond the factory spec, delivering more range, more power, or both. Upgrade batteries may require a matching controller upgrade.

Zero XE and XB Review: The Road-Legal Electric Dirt Bikes That Actually Work Off-Road

The Zero XB and Zero XE are genuinely unusual electric dirt bikes — they are road-legal out of the box, off-road capable on proper knobbly tyres, and backed by a manufacturer with 15 years of electric motorcycle experience. That combination is rare.

Zero XB — The Entry Point

At £3,890, the Zero XB is type-approved as an L1e moped — the same licence category as a 125 electric bike. CBT accessible, it can be ridden legally on UK roads from age 16. Specs: 9.8bhp, 2.4kWh battery, 47-mile range, CST off-road tyres, 21/18in wheels, KKE front forks.

Off-road performance is modest but genuine — the XB is designed as a dual-purpose commuter/trail bike rather than a performance machine. For riders who want something they can ride to the trailhead and then ride the trail, the XB makes strong sense.

Zero XE — Serious Off-Road

The Zero XE steps up significantly: 21bhp, 4.3kWh battery, 65-mile range, 53mph top speed. A1 licence category (not CBT — you need A1 or full motorcycle licence). Fully adjustable KKE suspension, 21/18in wheels, and a chassis designed for serious off-road use.

The XE is in a different performance class to the XB — comparable to a Talaria Sting R in off-road capability, with the added advantage of genuine road legality for trail access rides.

The Zero XE has more power (21bhp vs ~8bhp for stock LBX) and is road legal, but the Sur-Ron LBX is lighter, cheaper and has a much larger aftermarket upgrade ecosystem. The XE is the better choice for dual road/trail use; the LBX for dedicated off-road performance.
What licence do you need for the Zero XE?

Are Electric Dirt Bikes Legal in the UK?

The Short Answer

Yes — but with important conditions. Riding an electric dirt bike on private land with the landowner's permission is legal in the UK with no licence, insurance, or registration required. Riding on public roads requires the bike to be type-approved, registered with the DVLA, taxed, insured, and the rider must hold the appropriate licence.

Private Land Riding

Off-road use on private land is perfectly legal. This includes motocross tracks, farms, and any private land where you have permission. Most electric dirt bikes sold in the UK are designed for this use.

Road Legal Requirements

To ride on UK public roads, your electric bike must meet all of the following:

  • Factory type approval (L1e-A, L1e-B, or L3e category)
  • Registered with the DVLA and given a number plate
  • Valid MOT (if over 3 years old)
  • Road tax (currently £0 for zero-emission vehicles)
  • Valid insurance (at minimum third party)
  • Appropriate rider licence: CBT for L1e, full motorcycle licence for L3e

L1e vs L3e — What's the Difference?

L1e-A is the moped-equivalent category (max 28mph restricted, CBT required from age 16). L1e-B is a slightly faster moped class. L3e is the motorcycle equivalent, requiring a full A1 or A licence. Sur-Ron and Talaria both offer road-legal L1e variants.

ASA Warning

The ASA has upheld complaints against ads showing electric bikes being ridden on public roads without disclosing their legal classification. Always check if your bike is road-approved before using it on a public road.

Best Kids Electric Dirt Bikes UK 2025

Ages 3–6: Start Safe, Start Small

For the youngest riders, look for bikes with a maximum power of 350W, a maximum speed of 8–10mph, and a parental speed limiter. The Razor MX350 (£325) and FunBikes MX350 are proven choices. Automatic throttle cutoff when the bike tips over is essential.

Ages 6–10: Building Confidence

Move up to 350W–800W in this age group. The FunBikes MXR 790W (£435) is a strong choice — lightweight, adjustable speed limiter, and long run time. Seat height adjustability is important for growing riders.

Ages 10–14: Ready for More

Free UK Mainland Delivery

All orders to UK mainland addresses are delivered free of charge. Delivery to Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands and other remote areas may incur a surcharge — we will contact you before processing if this applies.

Delivery Timeframes

In-stock bikes are dispatched within 1–3 business days. Most orders arrive within 3–5 business days of dispatch. You will receive a tracking link by email and SMS when your order is dispatched.

How Bikes Are Delivered

All bikes are delivered by specialist two-wheel courier on a pallet or via a dedicated courier service. Bikes are approximately 80% assembled — final assembly (handlebars, pedals where applicable) takes around 20–30 minutes and requires basic hand tools.

Signature Required

All bike deliveries require a signature. Please ensure someone is available at the delivery address. A delivery note will be left if no one is home and the courier will reattempt delivery.

14-Day Return Right

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have the right to return most items within 14 days of receiving them, for any reason, for a full refund.

Condition of Returns

Items must be returned in their original condition, unused, and in original packaging where possible. Bikes that have been ridden (other than a brief test on private land) cannot be returned as new — these may be subject to a deduction for diminishment in value.

How to Return

All bikes come with a minimum 12-month UK manufacturer warranty. If your bike develops a fault, contact us immediately. We will arrange repair, replacement, or refund in line with your statutory rights.
