How to Choose Your First Electric Dirt Bike
How to Choose Your First Electric Dirt Bike
The electric dirt bike market has more choice than ever — which is great until you try to pick one. This guide cuts through the noise and helps you match the right bike to your size, experience, budget and riding plans.
Step 1: Where will you ride?
This is the first question because it narrows your options fast.
- Private land only (fields, tracks, farms with permission): any electric dirt bike is fine. Most models fall here.
- Public roads: you need a type-approved, road-legal model — the Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e, Talaria Sting L1e, RFN Ares RS or Stark Varg EX. See our road legal guide.
- Both: buy a road-legal model, or buy an off-road bike for the trails and accept you cannot ride it on the road.
Step 2: Who is the rider?
| Age / size | Best starting point |
| Ages 3–6 | Revvi 12in or Revvi 16in |
| Ages 6–10 | FunBikes MXR 790W or KTM SX-E 3 |
| Ages 8–12 | Sur-Ron Hyper Bee or KTM SX-E 5 |
| Teens / smaller adults | Sur-Ron Light Bee X |
| Adults | Light Bee X, Talaria Sting R or Ultra Bee |
| Experienced / MX racers | Storm Bee or Stark Varg |
Step 3: What is your budget?
| Under £500 | Kids' bikes: Revvi, FunBikes, Razor |
| £500–£1,500 | Older kids: FunBikes MXR 1400/1800, KTM SX-E range |
| £2,500–£4,000 | Entry adult: Hyper Bee, Light Bee X, Talaria Sting R, E Ride Pro |
| £4,000–£6,000 | Mid-range adult: Ultra Bee, Talaria MX5 Pro, Komodo |
| £6,000+ | Full-size MX: Storm Bee, Stark Varg |

Step 4: How much experience do you have?
- Complete beginner: start with a bike that has selectable ride modes so you can start low and build up. The Light Bee X (Eco + Sport modes) and Hyper Bee (3 modes) both do this well.
- Some motorcycle experience: you will be comfortable on any eMoto-class bike from day one. The Sting R or Ultra Bee are good starting points if you want more than entry-level power.
- Experienced MX rider: the Stark Varg is the only electric bike that matches a 450cc petrol bike. The Storm Bee is the more accessible full-size option.
Step 5: What else do you need?
- Riding gear: helmet, goggles, gloves, boots and protection. See our helmets & gear guide.
- Spare battery: useful for long sessions but not essential — most riders manage fine on a single charge.
- Insurance: optional off-road, compulsory on-road. See our insurance guide.
