How Fast Do Electric Dirt Bikes Go?
Top speed is the first spec most buyers ask about — and it varies enormously across the electric dirt bike range, from an 8mph kids' balance bike to a 68mph full-size MX machine. Here's how every class actually compares.
Top speed by category
| Category | Typical top speed | Example model |
| Kids' balance bikes (ages 2–6) | 3–8mph | Revvi 12in |
| Kids' step-up bikes (ages 6–12) | 15–20mph | Revvi 18in |
| Youth MX (ages 8–14) | 18–25mph | Sur-Ron Hyper Bee |
| Entry adult eMoto | 40–45mph | Sur-Ron Light Bee X |
| Mid-power adult eMoto | 50–55mph | Sur-Ron Ultra Bee |
| High-power adult eMoto | 60–68mph | Sur-Ron Storm Bee |
| Full-size race MX | Race-geared, not speed-limited | Stark Varg MX 1.2 |
The fastest bikes VoltTrail stocks
The Sur-Ron Storm Bee is the quickest bike in the eMoto class on paper — 21.5kW peak power and a claimed 68mph. The Talaria Komodo TL6000 isn't far behind at 66mph with 22kW. Both sit well above the more common Light Bee X (45mph) and Sting R (53mph) that most riders actually buy.
Why top speed isn't the whole story
A bike's real-world speed depends on rider weight, terrain, tyre choice and battery charge state — the quoted figures are manufacturer best-case. More importantly, most electric dirt bikes ship with selectable ride modes (Eco/Sport or similar), so a 55mph-capable bike can be ridden at a fraction of that speed while a new rider builds confidence. Top speed is a ceiling, not a riding requirement.
Speed and UK law
None of the off-road models above are road legal regardless of top speed — they're for private land only. If you specifically want to ride on UK roads, you need a type-approved L1e model like the Sur-Ron Light Bee L1e or Talaria Sting L1e, both electronically restricted to 28mph by law regardless of what the unrestricted version can do. See our road-legal electric dirt bike guide for the full picture.
Matching speed to rider experience
For a first bike, speed capability matters less than ride-mode flexibility and weight — a lighter, lower-powered bike like the Light Bee X is easier to control at low speed than a heavier high-power bike throttled right back. Save the 60mph+ bikes for once you're already comfortable on something in the 45–53mph range.
