72V Controller Upgrade Guide: Sur-Ron LBX & Talaria Sting
72V Controller Upgrade Guide: Sur-Ron LBX & Talaria Sting
Upgrading to a 72V battery on a Sur-Ron Light Bee X or Talaria Sting means replacing the stock controller — the OEM unit is rated for 60V and will be damaged or destroyed by higher voltage. This guide covers the three main aftermarket 72V controllers, which bikes they fit, and what you need to know before buying.
Why you need a new controller for 72V
The stock controller on both the Sur-Ron Light Bee X and Talaria Sting is rated for a maximum of 60V. A 72V battery pushes voltage beyond the controller's safe operating range, risking overheating, component failure or permanent damage. A 72V controller is not optional — it is required for any 72V battery upgrade.
72V controllers for the Sur-Ron Light Bee X
Votol EM-200 72V (Sur-Ron LBX)
The Votol EM-200 (£299) is a programmable sine-wave controller designed as a direct fit for the LBX chassis. Key features: programmable power curves, regenerative braking, and improved throttle response over stock. The Votol is the most popular choice for riders who want control over their power delivery — you can tune the curves to match your riding style using the Votol app.
eWatt 72V Controller (Sur-Ron LBX)
The eWatt 72V controller (£349) is purpose-built to pair with the eWatt 72V Race Battery v5. It delivers up to 28kW peak power with plug-and-play wiring for the LBX. If you are buying the eWatt battery, matching it with the eWatt controller is the simplest, most tested combination.
72V controllers for the Talaria Sting
Votol EM-200 72V (Talaria Sting)
The Votol EM-200 for Talaria (£299) is the same proven sine-wave controller, wired for the Sting platform. Same programmable curves, same regen braking — just a different harness to fit the Talaria chassis.
eWatt 72V Controller (Talaria Sting)
The eWatt 72V Talaria controller (£349) is designed for the Sting MX3, MX4 or MX5 platform when running the eWatt 72V 42Ah Race Battery.
EBMX X-9000 for the Talaria Sting XXX
The EBMX X-9000 (£449) is the high-performance option for the Talaria XXX platform. Rated at 74V+ and up to 30kW peak power with advanced FOC control and configurable ride modes. This is the controller for riders running the EBMX 74V 44Ah battery on a Talaria XXX — it is not interchangeable with the standard Sting.
Votol vs eWatt: which should you buy?
| Feature | Votol EM-200 | eWatt 72V |
| Price | £299 | £349 |
| Type | Sine-wave, programmable | Matched to eWatt battery |
| Peak power | Configurable | 28kW with eWatt battery |
| Best for | Riders who want to tune power curves | eWatt battery owners wanting plug-and-play |
If you are running an eWatt battery, buy the eWatt controller — it is the tested, supported combination. If you are running a DHS, Chi or other third-party 72V battery, the Votol EM-200 is the more versatile choice thanks to its programmable curves.
What else do you need?
A 72V controller upgrade always requires a matching 72V battery — see our 72V battery upgrade guide for the full rundown. You may also need a compatible charger and, depending on the battery, a wiring harness adapter. All five controllers on VoltTrail include the correct harness for their specified bike.
Does a 72V upgrade void the warranty?
Yes. Fitting an aftermarket controller and battery voids the manufacturer's warranty on the electrical system. It does not affect the frame or motor warranty as long as no physical modifications are made.
