How UK law treats electric dirt bikes
In the UK there are only two outcomes for an electric two-wheeler: it's either an EAPC (treated as a bicycle) or a motor vehicle (treated like any moped or motorcycle). There is no special "electric" exemption for dirt bikes.
EAPC — bicycle rules
Pedals that drive the bike, a motor of 250W or less, and power that cuts out at 15.5mph. No licence, tax, registration or insurance. Virtually no electric dirt bike meets this — they have no pedals and far more power.
Off-road only
A powerful eMoto with no type approval — a stock Sur-Ron, Talaria, Stark Varg or MX bike — can only be ridden on private land with the landowner's permission. Roads, pavements, bridleways, byways and parks are all off-limits.
Road-legal (type-approved)
A type-approved model such as the Light Bee L1e or Zero XB can be registered, plated, taxed and insured. As a moped-class L1e machine you'll need at least a CBT (or full AM/A1 licence), insurance, a number plate and a helmet.
